On the occasion of World Stroke Day, we want to emphasize the importance of prevention and awareness regarding this public health emergency.
According to the World Health Organization, each year, 15 million people worldwide suffer from a Stroke. Stroke poses a high risk of death, and survivors may experience loss of vision, speech, paralysis, or confusion, placing a heavy burden on families and communities.
Risk factors include hypertension, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and diabetes. Here are some key tips to reduce the risk of stroke:
1) Monitor your blood pressure: Well-controlled blood pressure is essential to reduce risks.
2) Adopt a balanced diet: Limit foods high in salt and fat, and prioritize fruits, vegetables, and fiber.
3) Quit smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for stroke.
4) Engage in regular physical activity: 30 minutes of moderate exercise, five days a week, can make a difference.
On this global day, we encourage everyone to take measures to protect their health and to mobilize to raise awareness about prevention and the signs of stroke, such as sudden loss of speech, weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg, and blurred vision. Every minute counts: in case of signs of stroke, call emergency services immediately.
Raising awareness and taking action today can save lives tomorrow.
